A doctor clarifies
This really helps against enlarged pores.
Reduction of the pores is possible
Many women are annoyed by their coarse-pored skin, which is shiny and often prone to blackheads. In order to refine the skin texture, one should pay attention to a few things and above all know which treatment methods really work and which do not. A dermatologist will tell you how large pores can be refined.
Why do we have pores?
The human body has over 300,000 pores. Pores are the openings for the hair follicles in the subcutis, from which sebum drains. They are present wherever hair roots are found – i.e. almost on the entire surface of the skin. The only exceptions are the palms of the hands, mucous membranes and the soles of the feet. “The pores are particularly large where the sebaceous gland, which uses this pore as an excretory duct, is particularly strongly developed. This is particularly the case in the face and in the T-zone, but also in the upper back and décolleté,” says dermatologist Prof. Dr. Volker Steinkraus from Hamburg (Germany) in an interview with Biotulin International.
How do enlarged pores occur?
Mainly the pore size is genetically determined. Therefore, someone who has very large-pored skin cannot expect the pores to become completely invisible again. People with combination skin or rather oily skin tend to have enlarged pores more often. This is because the sebaceous glands are more pronounced and thus more sebum is produced.
“When the sebaceous gland grows, the pore becomes larger because the whole apparatus on which the sebaceous gland is attached becomes larger. Then you can see the pore,” says Steinkraus. Those affected also have to fight more often with pimples or even acne because of the increased sebum production. “Acne can only develop where the sebaceous gland is active and the pore is consequently large”, emphasises the dermatologist. But pimples and blackheads can stretch the pores even further. Therefore the skin should always be well cleaned.
A healthy lifestyle can do no harm to reduce sebum production and thus prevent the development of pimples. Especially alcohol, nicotine and excessive stress should be avoided. For some people it also helps to avoid milk and dairy products.
Age plays a smaller role in pore size: “The pores probably get a little larger with age, but not necessarily. Actually, such a formed pore is the same size,” says Steinkraus.
vitamin A
Once the pore is enlarged, it no longer contracts by itself. There are, however, a few remedies to make the pores look smaller. According to the dermatologist, the most effective is the use of creams, serums or isotretinoin tablets (vitamin A derivative) containing vitamin A. According to Steinkraus, the pores can be permanently reduced by up to 60 percent after a certain period of time, as the activity of the sebaceous glands is reduced.
However, treatment with isotretinoin is often associated with many unpleasant side effects such as dry skin and should not be carried out by women who wish to have children. “It could lead to malformations in the child,” warns the dermatologist. Those who do not suffer from acne are therefore best advised to use the topical variant.

Skin Care- Reducing large pores
How to treat skin pores — they're so tiny, they shouldn't be that visible, right? Some of us have noticeable pores, and you will be searching for a solution. Try these methods before seeing a laser dermatologist as they may help reduce the size of pores to make them less obvious.
- Clean you face twice a day.
When dead skin cells accumulate on the surface of your pores, they expand and appear larger. So, it's important to always wash your face with a gentle cleanser, if you can tolerate 2% sal. Acid wash by Neutrogena – this is Dr Davin Lim’s personal recommendation. - Before you put on your foundation, use a primer.
Yes, you can camouflage their appearance with makeup. The use of blurring techniques by professional make up artists can help with small to medium large pores. - Be gentle with your skin.
Aggressive cleansing, exfoliating, and skin picking can cause wrinkles and lead to worsened acne, but going too rough on your skin can also damage your pores. Be gentle so you don't expand your pores, which you can do permanently. Avoid squeezing blackheads and zits- this is the number one cause of open pores on the nose. - Get a Hydrafacial monthly.
Hydrafacial treatments offer professional extraction and exfoliation and most importantly can infuse your skin with chemical peels and collagen building HA molecules. Video already done by Dr Davin Lim on Hydrafacial. - Exfoliate regularly but gently.
While keeping your face clean is so important, it's the act of getting rid of dead skin cells that really keeps your complexion looking its best. Exfoliation can be achieved in a number of ways, both physical and chemical. Dr Davin Lim recommends the Clarisonic as a physical method of exfoliation, and either AHA or high strength vitamin A as a chemical exfoliation agent. - Keep your skin extra hydrated.
The use of a hydrating serum before putting on moisturizer can shrink your pores by plumping up the surrounding skin. Loreal makes some products with HA based hydrating agents. - Add skin vitamins to your skincare routine.
Using a prescription-strength topical retinoid, such as Retin-A, or super strength retinol can increase cell turnover, thus exfoliating the pore and making them appear smaller. - Don't skip your moisturizers.
You already know lots of bad stuff can happen if you stop moisturizing, and enlarged pores are just another one. It's important to use a high-quality, noncomedogenic moisturizer twice a day- my choice? La Roche Posay. - Use sunscreen twice a day.
You've heard it once, you've heard it a thousand times, but that's because it's totally true: SPF is an integral part of your skincare routine. UV radiation breaks down collagen and elastin, thus expanding the pore. SPF 50 for Brisbane’s high UV index, twice a day- rain, hail or shine. Just do it! - Consult a laser dermatologist for options.
That's right: Lasers can help reduce your actual pore size. I consider your skin type-Ethnic skin colour, as well as your pore size to come up with a solution. Sometimes its lasers such as Fraxel, other times it's a TCA CROSS treatment. All treatments are tailored. Some patients require one treatment, others a series of sessions.
For a FREE Consult on skin pores, my senior laser nurses at The Fiori Institute of Skin and Body in Chermside and Garden City Westfield can assess your skin for Fraxel, Clear + Brilliant or other solutions such as creams and skin care. Thanks for watching this video, and see you next Saturday. Dr Davin Lim Laser dermatologist, The Fiori Institute of Skin and Body, Lasers and Lifts by Dr Davin Lim. Brisbane. Australia.
hey guys stop that doesn't leave
board-certified laser dermatologists
last week's video we did a quick
reviewing how to treat skin pore sizing
in someone of ethnic origin so with
someone that ethnic origin I use a
different device or a different method
today's video will be covering how to
treat skin pore sizing in general so
skin pores are basically divided into
three types small medium large and each
of them will have their own specific
method of how I actually approach them
okay so the majority of patients when
they see me they would have gone through
all the DIY tips all the skin creams all
the over-the-counter preparations that's
why they come assuming because nothing
else works so they would have gone
through their aah
I used a alpha hydroxy acids divide an
AP list a glycolic acid Peter that would
have had probably skin needling at home
or by a dermal therapist so these
patients when they come to me they have
pores which are hard to shift which
means I use these specific methods I'm
not saying this is the only method that
exists if I were to cover the entire
spectrum of how the treat boys you'll
probably fall asleep at 45 minutes into
this video so this is just a brief
outline on how I treat small medium and
large size pores so guys thanks very
much for watching and I'll show you how
I do things
the first thing to do is categorize
towards pores can be categorized into
large deep ports or iceberg scars that
can be categorized into medium sized
pores and they can also be categorized
to this small open pores but in reality
most patient will have mixed pores with
different sized pores small and medium
or small to large that is the reality of
the situation if you missed last week's
video it's to how to treat poor sizing
and ethnic skin types and with that I
use a picosure laser which is basically
basically a fractionated q-switch laser
here you can see me I'm having my pause
treated I've got small to medium sized
pores and I had mine treated about two
years ago I had only I think two
treatments in the end but I'll show you
before and afters were after just
treatment this is the treatment of
choice for myself my family including my
dad my dad had two treatments and very
shortly you can see the before and
afters in ethnic skin types so here you
can see me before with pause and later
so this is after just one treatment look
at the difference in the size of small
pores this is my dad with a small to
medium large pores and alas ptosis can
this be treated with Caucasian skin
types absolutely but they do need 2 to 3
sessions so that is the pker later ok
now let's talk about skin needling for
pore sizing the first skin roller was
invented nearly 30 years ago and it's
still used now is called derma rolling
it's extremely old it's three decades
old it can stimulate collagen production
so in the upcoming months I will show
you DIY tips and how the skin roll but
if you're watching this video chances
are you've tried skin rolling and your
pores are still present so my advice is
to go for something like a 0.5 to 1 mil
now the second generation of skin
rolling is actually skin needling we're
using non energy vertical micro needling
and that basically doesn't rip up the
skin as much and can stimulate collagen
much in the same way now third
generation third generation devices
include the indeed met intensive we can
adjust the pulse duration the energy
settings we can adjust the depth and we
can do all of this in the machine itself
and it uses RF or radio frequency
control energy to deliver heat as in
controlled heat to stimulate collagen
this in turn reduces pore sizing okay so
next week I will go through energy base
insulated vertically delivered micro
needling devices this is totally
different fourth-generation and what
this does is it basically insulates the
needle to deliver RF energy in a certain
depth of insulating the other aspects of
the skin so my favorite device is the
use of infinite infinite RF in this
setting it's very complex because the
insulation is I believe is not needed
because it's only treating skin pores
which only about 2.5
or less in-depth most patients do need
about two to three treatments I often
combine this with PRP I'll be doing the
whole segment on this next week
and it can be excellent reduce skin poor
sizing on the nose and small to medium
sized pores so excellent modality for
small to medium sized pores that's
infinite PRP insulated micro needling
the next treatment we'll be talking
about this contact radiofrequency
bipolar systems these devices I think
are overhyped emai tricks elos Emax
everyone's got one there's simple entry
point devices which means any consumer
or beautician can buy one and the energy
control is extremely variable together
with the tech techniques and contact
points I do use them I like it for early
acne in and small to medium sized pores
especially if they're early on and I'll
show you a couple of before and after so
these are predictable these are email
treatments one month apart before and
afters and once again excellent for
early acne scarring in small to medium
sized pores but that's all I use them
for I don't try to shrink late pore
sizing in this at all fractional laser
resurfacing is all the rage for the past
eight years or so many different devices
many different ways that treat I stick
to Fraxel I quite like using the Fraxel
in 1927 wavelength compared to the 1550
everyone was like hey 1550 is actually
the better wavelength of the 1440 but no
I do believe in 1927 both in the Pamir
with a clean breathing together with a
927 original Fraxel I believe in the
super high density mode is the treatment
of choice for pore size reduction
ostrich oh you a couple of before and
afters later so the whole idea with this
is not to follow the fractional guide
lines but actually the bulk healing now
if we're going for the big guns we're
looking at a co2 Fraxel so co2 Fraxel
basically it's a carbon dioxide Fraxel
laser it's great for enlarged pores due
to sun damage
the downside about this laser is that
the downtime following co2 laser
resurfacing is in the order of 10 days
and you will be red for six to eight
weeks afterwards but it's great for sun
damage pause I won't label you with lots
of before and afters that can be found
in my website linked below but this is
Fraxel 1927 one treatment in one
treatment only look at the pore size
reduction recovery time four days
another laser I love to use is actually
the clear and brilliant laser which is
essentially a Fraxel laser ample seen Bo
clean brilliant is actually a Fraxel
laser so it's a mini Fraxel laser which
means it delivers five millijoules a
quarter of what a normal Fraxel laser
can deliver but the great thing with
that is that that is the ideal treatment
for certain skin types like my skin type
or ethnic skin types but also to treat
certain conditions like melasma or
pigmentation and what it does is a
delivers fractionated laser beams into
the skin and that allows us not only to
treat pigmentation gently but allows us
to actually infuse and that's what I
like because we can infuse things like
ascorbic acid vitamin C or collagen
building peptides for example like
copper peptides rooms and even fading
creams so that's a beauty about these
lasers is that there are soft gentle but
they actually do work for the purpose so
I'll show you how it's done guys so this
is a clean brilliant using the standard
protocol basically it's two lines with
the twenty to forty percent overlap
horizontally and vertically this can be
safe in all skin types including ethnic
skin types all the way up to skin type
six so very very safe laser and you can
see it's a standard protocol of criss
crossing I use this lace in a slightly
different method that's the bulk heat
how this laser works is to basically
treat portions of skin leaving untreated
skin to actually heal up quicker so it
stimulates collagen production over time
what are the results like well after
about three
what treatments you can see you can have
a good pore reduction so this leaves me
with one of my favorite ways to treat
really deep ice pick scars and big pores
and that's to use trichloroacetic acid
or TCA traditionally the way to do this
is to actually use a toothpick to
actually dip and then dab I actually
like using the syringe delivery method I
find it quicker I'm not injecting so
once again I emphasize this I am NOT
injecting into the skin all I'm doing is
just dripping a tiny bit using osmosis
to actually carry on to treat the pause
so I find that it's a much quicker
method and for finer work yes I do use
the tooth bit but the majority of scars
I like using this method of a syringe to
delivery so once again not injecting do
not inject this this is just a drip
method and once again it's not an actual
drip itself it's just a tiny droplet
which is carried by the next droplet by
osmosis so it works really really well
it's very predictable the skin heals
over in five days and some other
before-and-afters like these are typical
examples of scars are treated after two
to three treatments you can see the
marked improvement in deep deep scars so
you can see pause over here large
enlarged pores before and after it's
really is a miraculous treatment and it
is very very predictable
once again contree glide pause and this
is after just two treatments with TCA
cross
and once again deep pause upper lip
super easy to treat before and afters so
this is mixed acne scarring too because
open pores before and then after two
episodes of TCA so you can see just
after two episodes of TCA no laser
resurfacing an improvement significant
improvement one skin deep open pores
before and after two treatments and two
treatments only a highly predictable
response a blade of laser resurfacing
can also be used to treat pores but
remember that pores are often flasks
shape so you actually have to cut to go
a lot deeper than what you
to pay for healing up time for this
procedures about ten days with redness
that may pursue for even six to eight
weeks so do I do this
absolutely do I like using it it's a
first-line treatment now I don't but it
does work and you can see with the
before-and-afters this can be a
remarkable change in pore size reduction
so show you a couple more
before-and-afters for really really deep
pores and fully resurfacing lasers can
actually work very very well in this
setting but like I said we try to go for
other lasers first guys thanks very much
for paying attention to that video I
hope that was informative I do one new
video every Saturday morning Saturday
morning Brisbane time so everything on
lasers on Phil is on procedural
dermatology in everything that's new or
coming out in the near future
in the next few weeks and next few
months I'll be discussing things like
DIY tips for example skin needling at
home discussing different types of skin
nearly including first-generation
dermapen third-generation intensive
treatments in all the way up to infamy
and presenting some really nice cases
for acne scar revision so a little bit
of mix here in there and I'll be doing
more DIY stuff in the next couple of
weeks guys really appreciate your
watching this video and I'll see you
next are they thanks that bye if you're
new to this channel I also do some
Instagram videos together with picture
uploads quite a fair few times a week
mostly educational so like I said this
is an educational based channel based
upon laser dermatology as well as what's
the latest in skin care and skin care
guides so i'm on instagram under dr.

Electric pore cleanser
Ideally you should also use an electric pore cleaner once or twice a week. This removes sebum, blackheads and dirt from the pores, causing them to contract. “There is a slight reduction in the size of the pores but it is not a measure that results in a great improvement,” says Steinkraus. Mechanical cleaning with the suction button is nevertheless a good alternative to chemical peelings. Attention: Electric pore cleaners must not be used for acne skin!
BPO washing lotion
For daily cleaning Steinkraus also recommends washing lotions with benzyl peroxide (BPO). These are available without prescription in pharmacies.
Professional face cleaning
Going to a beautician is especially worthwhile for women with skin problems such as acne or large pores. “Once every few weeks, in addition to professional facial cleansing. The steam makes the skin soft and then you can wonderfully squeeze the pores,” the expert adds.
Face masks
You can also do something at home to combat pores that are too large. Healing earth masks and bio cellulose masks, for example, are well suited to help free blocked pores and refine the skin texture. Alternatively, astringent masks are also suitable: “When you remove the mask, you have the feeling that the skin is a little too tight” says Steinkraus. However, according to him, one cannot expect a large pore-reducing effect.
Microdermabrasion
In this procedure, the uppermost skin layer is removed with a grinding head with a diamond attachment. Microdermabrasion is often combined with a fruit acid peeling. This makes the pores appear smaller.
Laser treatment
Another professional method for minimizing pores is laser treatment. Here, collagen production and the formation of new skin cells are stimulated. Thus, the enlarged pores become smaller.
The right make-up
Even if you tend to have large pores, you can use make-up. It has “no effect on pore size”, according to the dermatologist. However, unsuitable products can clog the pores and thus enlarge them. Therefore, you should make sure that the label “non-comedogenic” appears on the packaging. This will prevent the pores from becoming clogged and the formation of pimples. Before applying a suitable foundation or BB/CC cream, you should apply a Pore Minimizer as make-up primer. Large pores are simply optically filled and concealed.
