What really helps against large pores?

If the facial skin is not even and constantly shiny, expensive creams, household remedies such as ice cubes or even mixed cucumber masks often show no lasting effect. Biotulin asked an expert for tips and tricks to refine the skin texture and eliminate large pores.

Besides pimples, large pores are one of the most unwelcome blemishes, so many people would like to do without their pores completely – and they have a very useful function. Dr. med. Tanja C. Fischer, dermatologist from Berlin, on Biotulin: “Pores are small openings that occur in countless numbers in human skin. They are small channels through which the body secretes sebum. This sebum serves to keep the uppermost layer of skin, the so-called horny layer, and also the hair supple. In addition, sebum production also has an important protective function, according to the expert. The sebum is important to protect the skin from diseases, bacteria and environmental influences.

How do enlarged pores develop?

“The size of skin pores is mainly genetically determined. People who tend to have oily skin tend to have larger pores and are also more susceptible to pimples, acne and general impurities,” reveals Dr. Fischer in response to Biotulins demand. In addition, pore size is also influenced by environmental influences such as UV rays, personal lifestyle (nicotine, stress, alcohol, unhealthy nutrition) and the natural ageing process. In certain phases of life, such as puberty, pregnancy or menopause, sebum production is increased due to hormonal changes, the expert knows.

Do not wash your face too often. Twice a day – in the morning and in the evening – is enough. A moisturizing, pH-neutral cleanser is the best way to help. Large pores are NOT the result of impurities. In general, the following applies to skin care: Avoid creamy and greasy textures, rather use light fluids or refreshing and moisturizing gels as care products. For very oily skin which produces an excessive amount of sebum and has large pores, products with high doses of retinol (vitamin A) are recommended. Tea tree oil, zinc, silicon and salicylic acid also have sebum-regulating effects.

Clarifying face masks, e.g. with healing earth, help to refine the pores. They stimulate the blood circulation and promote the excretion of excess sebum. The mask should bind to blocked pores and blackheads and then become firm. This way, the impurities are simply pulled out of the skin directly when the mask is removed.

Make-up clogs the pores and promotes pimples

There are plenty of Pore Minimizers available in stores. However, they can only visually conceal enlarged pores instead of actually reducing them. The polymers contained in the pore are deposited in the pore and thus prevent the light from being refracted in the depression. Primers and make-up bases have a similar effect. Make-up should only be used sparingly and rarely. With large-pored skin, the foundation often gets stuck in the pores, which makes it look even bigger and less attractive. It is best to conceal blemishes only in places with a concealer instead of covering the entire face with make-up or using a light BB or CC cream instead of foundation.

Important, especially with large pores: products with light protection. Because if the skin ages faster, it becomes flabby and the pores expand additionally.

Professional treatments for large pores

The chemical peeling

In the process, the uppermost layer of skin is removed by means of fruit acids. This regenerates itself afterwards and looks fresher, younger and finer, pores can appear smaller. Dr. med. Tanja C. Fischer: “However, this method is not completely harmless and should be carried out by an expert in any case, since if the acid concentration is too high, the skin is corroded and scars can remain. And please do not perform it directly before an important appointment or date: The skin can be red and peeling for days.

The microdermabrasion

This method is often combined with a chemical peeling. The top layer of skin is also removed mechanically with a grinding head with a diamond attachment, which reduces the pores and makes the skin look more even.

Laser treatment

In an approx. 40-minute treatment, similar to chemical peeling, collagen production and the formation of new skin cells is stimulated. As a result, the pore size becomes smaller and the complexion looks more even. Advantage: The method is gentler, the skin heals faster. Only shortly after the treatment the face is slightly reddened.
